Steinway & Sons concert grand pianos are both; benchmark and inspiration

The three Steinway & Sons concert grand pianos at my academy are more than just instruments – they are your personal teaching pianos.

I have carefully invested in these Steinways to provide an unparalleled experience: during your lessons, you can bring them to concert-ready condition. The soundboards and bridges of each piano are in excellent condition, enabling you to fully appreciate their tonal depth and responsiveness.

This is a unique opportunity to study the distinctive character and craftsmanship of three Steinway concert grands. See for yourself the subtle differences in design, action geometry and touch, and discover the qualities that make each one exceptional.

All three of the training pianos were crafted in the Hamburg factory during the 1980s and 1990s – a typical era for instruments that, while in need of renovation or new hammer heads, offer invaluable insight into the mechanics, tone, and spirit of Steinway pianos.

Why training on original Steinway matters

Learning on a Steinway concert grand piano offers more than just mastery of the instrument itself. Here, you can refine every intonation nuance, hammer shape and tonal regulation on the highest quality instruments. By understanding how Steinway's touch, action and design influence the sound, you will develop a depth of insight and precision that will naturally inform your work with any piano. Every adjustment you make teaches you how to balance clarity, warmth and projection, equipping you with the skills to become a confident, versatile and musically sensitive piano technician.

Steinway Model D-274 (built in 1982)

Working on the Steinway Model D-274 means responsibility – and humility – for me. This concert grand piano is no ordinary instrument, but an acoustic monument. An authority. Even the smallest change in settings affects a soundscape that effortlessly fills a hall. A fraction of a millimetre determines radiance or restraint, and whether hardness becomes majestic clarity and restlessness becomes carrying power.

Here, precision craftsmanship determines musical quality. And that is precisely what fills me with awe.

Technical features

  • Epoxy soundboard varnish
  • Bridges with boxwood bridge caps
  • Ivory key coverings
  • 90° angle of the whippen jack
  • 100% intact soundboard and bridges

Steinway Model C-227 (build in 1988)

The C-227 is more compact than the D-274, but it is precisely this balance between size and sound that makes it so appealing. Compared to the D-274, its sound projection is more concentrated than monumental, its strength lying in intimacy, presence and immediate response.

An excellent training instrument for our seminars.

Technical features

  • Epoxy soundboard finish

Steinway Model B-211 (build in 1989)

The Steinway B-211 is an icon.

No other model – across all brands – is as sought-after, valued and loved as this grand piano. It combines grandeur and intimacy, power and lyricism in a way that impresses pianists worldwide. With this Steinway, anything is possible during our seminars. It carries the fine, chamber music-like transparency as naturally as the grand, concert-like tone.
